Traditional Crafts

An early morning tour in Tyre city shows can show the active crafts in process. fishermen for example, arriving to the port during (7-9:00) interval depending on how far the fishing location is. Black smith, although there's not many left, but the currently available places producing such products "see pictures below" are only supported by them selves to sustain the production level and insure the shy demand on there products due to unregulated import of similar products. searching for glassware crafts, nothing we could spot, later we found a place in another city "Saida" in the old town still surviving.

Fishermen

Tyre is a coastal city in southern Lebanon that has a long history of fishing as a main source of livelihood for many families. Fishing is not only an economic activity, but also a cultural heritage that reflects the identity and values of the local community. However, traditional fishing in Tyre faces many challenges and threats, such as overfishing, pollution, climate change, and competition from industrial fishing. These factors have reduced the fish stocks and the income of the fishermen, who struggle to maintain their boats and nets. Moreover, traditional fishing is losing its appeal among the younger generations, who prefer to seek other opportunities in urban areas or abroad. Therefore, there is an urgent need to preserve and promote traditional fishing in Tyre as a sustainable and valuable practice that contributes to the social and environmental well-being of the city and its people.

Like everywhere in the world, fishing process follow similar timeline. The exact time they have to leave the harbor reaching the designated fishing area before sunrise or after sunset. this is mostly dependent on the techniques being used such as small or large net opening, a hook, or dragging hook fishing etc..

Most of the known available fish are;

1- Squirrelfish

2- Lionfish

3- Pufferfish (quantities increased enormously in the last few years)

4- Parrotfish

5- Dolphinefish

6- Grey Mullet

7- Tilefish

Black Smith

The blacksmith is another traditional craft in Tyre that has been practiced for centuries. The blacksmith uses fire, hammer, and anvil to shape metal into various tools and objects, such as knives, scissors, horseshoes, and ornaments. The blacksmith is skilled in working with different metals, such as iron, steel, copper, and brass. The blacksmith also plays a role in repairing and maintaining the equipment of other craftsmen, such as the fishermen and the carpenters. However, like traditional fishing, the blacksmith craft is facing a decline in demand and popularity. The blacksmith has to compete with cheaper and mass-produced products that are imported from other countries. Moreover, the blacksmith has difficulties in finding raw materials and customers, as well as passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation. Therefore, the blacksmith craft is in danger of disappearing and needs to be supported and preserved as a part of Tyre’s cultural heritage.

Antiquarians

Tyre is a city with a rich and ancient history that dates back to the Phoenician civilization. The city has many archaeological sites and monuments that testify to its historical and cultural significance. Antiquarians collectors are people who collect and sell antique items, such as coins, pottery, jewelry, and statues, that are found in or near these sites. Antiquarians collectors are motivated by different reasons, such as passion, curiosity, or profit. Some of them are licensed and authorized by the government to conduct their activities, while others are illegal and operate in the black market. Antiquarians collectors face many challenges and risks, such as legal sanctions, theft, fraud, and damage to the items. Moreover, antiquarians collectors have an impact on the preservation and conservation of the cultural heritage of Tyre. On one hand, they can contribute to the discovery and documentation of new artifacts and information. On the other hand, they can also cause harm and loss to the archaeological sites and materials. Therefore, antiquarians collectors have a complex and controversial role in Tyre’s current situation.
